Steps get built to a code measurement, not a guess. Under South Carolina’s adopted residential code, Section R311.7.5.1 caps the riser height at 7¾ inches for concrete steps, or 8 inches for masonry stairs, measured vertically between the leading edges of the treads. Section R311.7.5.2 sets a 10-inch minimum tread depth, measured the same way. Within one flight, the code will not let the tallest and shortest risers, or the deepest and shallowest treads, differ by more than ⅜ inch, because that small a difference is enough to trip someone who is not looking down.
Where the steps meet the house is a joint, not a seam that gets poured solid. NRMCA’s guide to concrete joints calls for an isolation joint anywhere a slab meets a wall, footing or another point of restraint, and names stairs specifically as one of the elements that needs to move independently from the slab or footing next to it. Skip that joint and the steps crack against the house instead of settling on their own.
The clearest sign is underfoot: if one step feels taller or shallower than the rest, it may be out of the code’s ⅜ inch tolerance between the largest and smallest riser or tread, which is a trip hazard as much as a cosmetic one. A crack or gap opening up where the steps meet the house usually means there was never an isolation joint there, or it failed, and NRMCA’s guide to cracking lists that kind of restraint crack alongside settlement cracks as defects that go beyond the surface. Steps that have visibly tilted, dropped at one corner, or pulled away from the porch slab point to movement in the base underneath, the kind NRMCA’s guide to cracking calls a settlement crack. If the porch slab is sound and only the steps have failed, the steps can be replaced on their own. If the same settlement is under both, replacing only the steps means coming back for the porch later.

We work out of our shop at 4706 Locust Hill Rd in Taylors, on the Wade Hampton Blvd (US-29) corridor into Greenville. Greenville County jobs are reached along US-29, US-276 and I-385; Spartanburg and Anderson county work runs off I-85, and Laurens County work down I-385, to about 40 miles out from Taylors.
