What residential concrete work do you take on in Asheville?
- Driveways and garage slabs: New pours and full replacements. On a sloped Asheville approach the slab goes to five or six inches with steel in it rather than a standard four-inch pour.

What does a residential slab pour need to meet code in Asheville?
North Carolina's current residential code took effect January 1, 2019, built on the 2015 International Residential Code with the state's own amendments. Section R506 sets the baseline for a concrete floor poured on ground: the code requires the slab to be a minimum of three and a half inches thick, set over a four inch base course of clean graded sand, gravel or crushed stone, with a vapor retarder between the concrete and that base unless the area is exempted, such as a garage, driveway or patio.
A residential permit in Asheville goes through the city's Permit Application Center at 161 South Charlotte Street, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or through the city's online Development Portal.
Do I need to replace my driveway or patio in Asheville?
Asheville's most recent freeze season ran from the first freeze on November 1 to the last freeze on March 29, a 149 day stretch, according to National Weather Service records for the airport. Concrete that sits saturated through that many freeze and thaw cycles is a candidate for scaling: flaking or peeling of the surface that starts in small patches and, in moderate cases, exposes the aggregate under up to three eighths of an inch of lost mortar. Non air entrained concrete, a low strength mix, or heavy deicing salt on a new pour all raise the odds of it. If a driveway, patio or walkway is flaking, pitting or losing surface stone at the edges rather than just showing a hairline crack, that is scaling, not settling, and it usually means the surface mix was wrong for our winters.
