Greenville weather is real load on a slab. The city sees around 54 nights a year at or below freezing on top of 47.2 inches of rain, and its ice storms come mixed with rain more often than snow. Freeze-thaw cycling on wet ground is what works cracks into driveways here, and it is why drainage gets planned before placement. Thickness is the other lever against that cycling. Industry guidance puts 4 inches as the floor for a slab carrying a standard passenger vehicle or SUV, with 5 to 6 inches called for once heavier trucks or an RV park on it regularly, and areas with real freeze-thaw exposure are routinely built at the thicker end of that range rather than the minimum (Concrete Network, driveway thickness guide, read 2026-09-28). Control joints follow the same logic in reverse: cut in feet at roughly 2 to 3 times the slab thickness in inches, so a 4-inch driveway typically takes a joint every 8 to 12 feet to keep any crack that does form running straight down a seam instead of across the face of the slab.
The Greenville County rule that decides how a driveway meets the road. Greenville County's own driveway guidance, revised in October 2023, is explicit about this: unless a curb is already present, the way it is in most subdivisions, concrete is not allowed in the road right-of-way. The apron from the right-of-way out to the pavement has to be asphalt, and the county does not maintain or repair concrete driveways.
