The City of Asheville sorts a commercial project into one of three permit levels by size. Level 1 covers buildings smaller than 35,000 square feet or fewer than 20 units, Level 2 runs 35,000 to 100,000 square feet or 20 to 50 units, and Level 3 covers anything larger. Applications go through the city's Permit Application Center at 161 South Charlotte Street, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or the online Development Portal. North Carolina's current code took effect January 1, 2019, built on the 2015 International Codes with the state's amendments, and it is what the drawings for a commercial pour in Asheville get checked against.
