Concrete slab questions we hear in Greenville
It depends on what the slab carries. A patio or shed floor is usually poured at four inches. A slab that has to take a vehicle, a lift, or heavy equipment gets five to six inches with a thicker edge. We spec the thickness on-site once we know the use and the soil, so you are not paying for concrete you do not need or living with a slab that is too thin.
We do the whole job in-house. That means grading, hauling in and compacting the stone base, setting forms, placing reinforcement, pouring, and finishing. Base prep is where most failed slabs go wrong, so we do not leave it to someone else.
Upstate red clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and that movement is what cracks slabs poured on a poor base. We control it with a properly compacted stone base, the right reinforcement, and control joints cut where cracks want to form, so the slab moves in the joints instead of across the surface.
You can usually walk on it the next day. For a vehicle or heavy equipment we ask you to wait until the concrete has cured enough to carry the load, which is typically about a week depending on the mix and the weather. We give you the real timeline for your pour, not a guess.

How we build a slab that stays flat
Most slab failures trace back to the base and the joints, not the concrete itself. Here is the order we work in on every pour.
- Step : 01
Grade and compact the base
We strip the topsoil, bring the sub-grade to the right height, and compact a stone base in lifts. On Upstate clay this step matters more than anywhere, because clay that was never compacted keeps settling under the slab.
- Step : 02
Form, reinforce, and set the thickness
Forms go in dead level. We reinforce with wire mesh or rebar depending on the load, add a vapor barrier where the slab is enclosed, and set the thickness to the use. A four-inch pour is right for a patio or a floor; a slab taking a vehicle or equipment gets five to six inches and a thicker edge.

Pour, finish, and cut the joints
We place a 4000 PSI mix, finish it to the surface you want, and cut control joints so the slab cracks along a clean line instead of across the middle. Then we let it cure before it takes any real load.
