A pool deck is exterior flatwork first, and NRMCA’s guide to finishing concrete is direct about what that means: exterior slabs must be sloped to drain water with a texture that will not be slippery when wet. In practice that means a broom or similar texture pulled across the surface after floating, not a hard steel-troweled finish, because the same guide notes that repeated passes with a steel trowel produce a smooth floor that is slippery when wet, the last thing you want barefoot beside a pool.
Joints matter just as much around a pool. NRMCA’s guide to slab joints calls for isolation joints wherever a slab meets another part of the structure it should be free to move against, and lists driveways and patios meeting sidewalks, garage slabs and stairs as the kind of junction that needs one. Around a pool, that same logic applies where the deck meets the coping, so the two can move independently instead of cracking against each other.
A pool deck that has gone slick when wet, especially around the coping, is usually a texture problem: years of wear or a hard-troweled original finish can polish the surface smooth, and NRMCA’s own finishing guide notes that a smooth, steel-troweled surface is slippery when wet. Water that pools instead of running off means the slope that same NRMCA guide calls for has settled out of level. Cracking along the line where the deck meets the coping often means the isolation joint NRMCA’s guide to slab joints calls for was never cut, or has failed, letting the two surfaces fight each other instead of moving independently. Wider cracks that run through the slab, rather than a fine surface pattern, point to a settlement crack in the base underneath. Something textured. A broom finish or a textured stamp keeps grip when the surface is wet; a smooth trowel finish does not, which is why we do not use one around a pool.

Greenville County jobs are reached along US-29, US-276 and I-385; Spartanburg and Anderson county work runs off I-85, and Laurens County work down I-385, to about 40 miles out from Taylors.
