What makes a decorative finish hold up through an Asheville winter?
A stamped or stained finish is only as good as the concrete under it. Asheville's most recent freeze season ran 149 days, from the first freeze on November 1 to the last on March 29, and concrete that is saturated through that many freeze and thaw cycles is what causes scaling: the surface mortar flaking or peeling away, starting in small patches that can spread to expose the aggregate underneath. A non air entrained mix, a weak surface from poor finishing, or deicing salt applied too soon all raise the risk, and none of it can be seen once a stamp pattern and color are worked into the surface. A stamp or stain placed over a slab that has already scaled or cracked through fails with it. A finish belongs on a sound slab; a failed one has to come out first.
What are the signs a stamped or decorative surface needs attention?
Scaling shows up in stages, and the stage tells you how urgent it is. Light scaling is small, localized flaking that has not reached the aggregate. Moderate scaling exposes the aggregate and can mean up to three eighths of an inch of surface mortar is already gone. Severe scaling has lost enough surface that the aggregate clearly stands out underfoot, and on a stamped or colored finish that shows as patches where the pattern or color has worn through to bare stone. Any of these stages is worse on a finish than on plain concrete, because the stamped or stained layer is thinner than the slab under it and has less material to lose before the pattern is gone.
