A repour starts with removal, not concrete. Once the old slab is out, the replacement is placed under the same rules as any new slab-on-ground: IRC Section R506 calls for a 4-inch base course of clean graded sand, gravel or crushed stone under the new slab where it sits below grade, with an exception on well-drained soils, and a minimum floor thickness of 3.5 inches. ACI 332, the residential concrete code that same section leans on, covers footings, foundation walls and slabs-on-ground for one- and two-family homes.
Curing decides when the new slab can actually be used, not the calendar. A driveway and sidewalk spec sheet published with NRMCA’s permission sets the reopening point at 7 days of curing, or sooner once testing confirms 2,500 psi, and South Carolina’s own 2021 Residential Code, in force since January 1, 2023 per the state Building Codes Council, is the edition a repour is inspected against today.
Some damage is cosmetic; some means the base failed. Scaling, local flaking or peeling from freeze-thaw cycling that can expose up to three-eighths of an inch of surface mortar in moderate cases, is a surface problem NRMCA’s guide to scaling ties to weak or saturated concrete, not necessarily a bad base. Plastic shrinkage cracks are different: the shallow cracks, usually an inch to three feet apart, that form while the concrete is still plastic, which NRMCA’s guide flags as a sign the original pour dried out too fast during finishing. A slab with heaving, settlement or a trip-hazard edge between panels is past the patching stage.
