A garage or shop slab is still a slab-on-ground under IRC Section R506: a 4-inch base course of clean graded sand, gravel or crushed stone goes under it where it sits below grade, with an exception on well-drained soils, and the floor itself is built to a minimum 3.5 inches thick. ACI 332, the residential concrete code, covers slabs-on-ground for one- and two-family homes and their accessory structures, which is exactly what a detached garage or shop building is. Joints matter more under a vehicle or equipment load, not less. NRMCA’s guide to slab joints sets maximum spacing at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, about 10 feet on a 4-inch floor, with panels kept square or close to it so no single joint has to carry more than its share of the shrinkage. That 3.5-inch IRC floor minimum is thinner than the 4-inch floor most guidance sets for a driveway carrying a passenger vehicle, which tracks with a garage slab seeing lighter, slower, better-distributed loads than a driveway apron does under the same tires.
Vehicles bring their own wear into a garage slab. NRMCA’s guide to scaling names garage slabs directly: deicing salt tracked in on tires and left to sit is one of the named causes of surface flaking, alongside freeze-thaw cycling and a slab that was not cured properly before it saw traffic. A driveway and sidewalk spec sheet published with NRMCA’s permission sets 7 days of curing, or sooner once testing confirms 2,500 psi, as the point a new slab is ready for that kind of load, so a floor that was driven on early is more likely to show early wear.
