Decorative concrete is not a coating added after the fact. It is the same slab-on-ground work covered by ACI 332, Code for Residential Concrete, which governs footings, foundation walls and slabs-on-ground for one- and two-family homes, poured and finished with integral color, a stamped texture or an exposed aggregate finish worked in while the concrete is still plastic.
Joints still have to be planned before the pour: NRMCA’s guide to joints in concrete slabs sets maximum spacing at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, about 10 feet on a standard 4-inch slab, and a joint that lands in the wrong spot breaks up a stamped pattern more visibly than it would a plain drive. Greenville and the Upstate also sit on Cecil series soils, mapped by the USDA as well-drained Piedmont ground with a red clay subsoil, and South Carolina’s 2021 Residential Code, in force since January 1, 2023, still requires the slab under that pattern to follow Section R403, R506 or ACI 332 on whatever soil is actually there.
Two surface defects show up most on stamped and stained work. Crazing is a network of fine, shallow hairline cracks in a hexagonal pattern, rarely more than an eighth of an inch deep and most visible on steel-troweled surfaces within the first week, per NRMCA’s guide to crazing. Scaling is different: local flaking or peeling from repeated freeze-thaw cycles, starting as small patches and, in moderate cases, taking up to three-eighths of an inch of surface mortar with it, per NRMCA’s guide to scaling. A joint that was never cut where the stamped pattern needed one will also read as a crack later, since NRMCA treats a joint as a planned crack, not an afterthought.
