Strength requirements move with what is exposed to weather. Under the 2021 International Residential Code, which South Carolina jurisdictions enforce (the City of Spartanburg has run the 2021 edition since January 2023), interior slabs not exposed to weather need a minimum 2,500 psi at 28 days, while porches, carport slabs, steps and garage floors exposed to the weather step up to 3,000 or 3,500 psi depending on the local weathering exposure (IRC Table R402.2). Those are code minimums, not necessarily the mix we run, and the address and the use decide which column applies.
Curing sets the schedule too. NRMCA’s guidance is to cure new concrete for a sufficient period, typically 3 to 7 days, and industry driveway guidance holds vehicles off a new driveway or slab for at least 7 days, or sooner only once testing confirms 2,500 psi. That is why a freshly poured driveway or garage pad stays roped off for about a week before it takes a car. After that first week, whether to seal the new driveway before winter is the next question.
A few signs separate ordinary wear from a slab that needs real work. Random hairline cracks that showed up early and stayed shallow are common and, per NRMCA’s CIP 4, “rarely affect the structural integrity or the service life of concrete” on their own. Cracks that follow a joint line, that step up or down on either side, or that keep widening are a different story and point to subgrade movement rather than ordinary shrinkage. The Michigan Concrete Association’s driveway page says a concrete driveway often lasts over 30 years, so a slab failing well short of that, chipping at the edges, heaving, or holding standing water after rain, is worth a look rather than a patch. We work out of our shop at 4706 Locust Hill Rd in Taylors, on the Wade Hampton Blvd (US-29) corridor into Greenville. Greenville County jobs are reached along US-29, US-276 and I-385; Spartanburg and Anderson county work runs off I-85, and Laurens County work down I-385, to about 40 miles out from Taylors. From the shop it is about 5.4 mi straight-line to Travelers Rest, 13.7 mi to Lyman, 14.6 mi to Wellford and 21.4 mi to Boiling Springs.
