Finishes we lay down

The finish is chosen at the estimate, because it changes how the surface looks, how it drains and how it feels underfoot.

  • Broom finish - textured, grippy and easy to keep
  • Stamped patterns that read as stone, slate or brick
  • Integral and release colour worked into the pour
  • Exposed aggregate for texture and grip
  • Bordered and banded edges that frame the space

Patios, steps and pool decks taking shape. Flatwork like this is thin and wide, so the base under it and the slope across it matter more than the surface you see.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you pour a patio onto an existing slab?

Sometimes. If the slab underneath is sound and sitting flat, an overlay can go over it. If it has settled, or the cracks run the full depth, anything laid on top will move with it - in that case the honest answer is a tear-out and a fresh pour. We look at the slab and tell you which one it is.

What is the difference between a stamped and a broom finish?

A broom finish is a textured surface drawn across fresh concrete - plain, grippy and easy to live with. Stamped concrete is pressed with a pattern while the slab is still workable, so it reads as stone, slate or brick. Stamping costs more and has to be done in one window, because there is no second pass at it once the concrete sets.

Does a patio need reinforcement?

A patio is thin and wide, so it carries a lot of surface over ground that moves. Reinforcement and the placement of control joints are what decide where - and whether - it cracks. Both are decided at the estimate, along with the thickness and the base.

How soon can we use it after the pour?

Concrete cures rather than dries, and it keeps gaining strength for weeks. We tell you at the pour when the slab is ready to walk on and when it is ready for furniture, because it depends on the mix, the thickness and the weather that week.
