This is one of the most common calls we get across Greenville County, and it is also the one where the wrong answer costs the most. Resurfacing a driveway that needed replacing means paying for a fix that fails with the slab underneath it. Replacing a driveway that only needed a fresh surface means spending more than you had to. The right call comes down to one question: is the problem the surface, or is it what the surface is sitting on?
What resurfacing actually is
Resurfacing, or an overlay, bonds a thin new layer of concrete over your existing driveway. Done on the right slab it is a genuine upgrade: it covers surface wear, evens out minor spalling, and can carry a fresh broom or decorative finish. It is faster and uses less material than a full replacement because the old slab stays in place and becomes the base for the new surface.
That last part is the whole story. An overlay is only ever as good as the slab underneath it. If that slab is sound, level, and cracking only at the surface, resurfacing is a smart, cost-effective choice. If the slab has moved, resurfacing just buys you a nicer-looking version of the same problem.
What tear-out and repour actually is
A repour is exactly what it sounds like. We break out the old driveway, haul it off, and start over from the ground: regrade and recompact the base, set new forms, place reinforcement, pour a fresh 4000 PSI slab, and cut the control joints where we want the cracks to go. It is more work and more concrete, and it resets every one of the things that make a driveway last. The red clay question that decides it
Most of the Upstate sits on Piedmont red clay, and clay moves with moisture. That movement is behind a large share of the cracked driveways we see around Greenville, Taylors, and Greer. When a driveway is cracking because the clay under it was never properly compacted, or because there was no real stone base to begin with, the failure is coming from below. An overlay poured on top of that will crack again along the same lines, because nothing under the surface changed.
This is why so many Upstate driveways that look like a resurfacing job are really a repour. The surface is the symptom; the base is the cause. The only way to fix a base problem is to get to the base.

You will not know for certain without an eye on the slab, but these are the signs we read when we walk a driveway:
Resurfacing may be enough when
The cracks are shallow and hairline, the slab sits flat with no sections that have heaved or sunk, the edges are intact, and the driveway drains without pooling. That is surface wear on a sound slab, and an overlay can genuinely renew it.
Tear-out and repour is the honest answer when
Sections have settled or lifted so the slab is no longer level, cracks are wide or run the full width, pieces move underfoot, or the same cracks have already come back after a patch. Those are base and structural problems, and a surface layer will not hold them.
